This year’s nominations for the 89th Academy Awards show that social media campaigns and boycotts do work.   After two years of a lack of diversity with the Academy’s nominations, this year the Oscars are not so white. The recognition of black actors highlights the Academy’s progress. In the UK and the US the creative industry have been largely criticised about the lack of BAME talent on our screens. This became so much of a problem earlier this year, that it birthed the hashtag, #OscarsSoWhite on Twitter and caused many famous actors such as Michael Moore, Will Smith and Ava DuVernay to boycott the event.
